Course Objective

This course introduces students to public speaking and storytelling. Students will develop their skills in presentation and oral communication techniques in English. Students will learn to write and deliver powerful speeches & stories in real world settings, develop knowledge of public speaking as an art form, and will practice using appropriate technologies to enhance their public presentations.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the difference between speech and writing and non-words and paralanguage
2. Define and describe communication, meta-communication, and symbols
3. Identify the one-way communication model, two-way communication model, and the inferential model of communication
4. Develop stories they can use to inspire their team, internal stakeholders, and customers
5. Structure, craft, and deliver powerful stories, using the 6-step story structure
6. List the filters of communication and "Golden Rules for Writing"
7. Create a checklist for choosing the best words in your writing
8. Identify modifiers, parallel form, indefinite starters, and dangling modifiers
9. Define content, functional, connotative, abstract, concrete, and obsolete words
